It was a musical movement that was easy to ignore, mostly because its fans – people my age, most of whom were part of the post-Boomer “Baby Bust” that gave us the dismal common experience of being children in the ‘70s – were a small demographic, of no practical value to marketers. Our bands were a diverse bunch, with a stew of influences that we excavated in used record stores. “There was no stylistic bandwagon for the media to latch on to,” recalls Michael Azerrad in Our Band Could Be Your Life, his history of American ‘80s indie rock, “so the record-buying public had to find things there on a band-to-band basis, rather than buying into a bunch of talk about a ‘new sound.’”

Looks like Chris Farlowe’s was the first EP released on the Immediate label by any artist.

The label was  started in 1965 by The Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham and Tony Calder concentrating on the London-based blues and R&B scene.  On this EP the arrangements were by Art Greensdale and the rhythm section was led by Keith Jaggers.

I was pleased with myself for finally finding a copy of this, even though it wasn’t in the greatest condition. Chris Farlowe in my opinion is one of  Rock and R&B’s  finest singers and is sadly overlooked in the big scheme of things. I’m sure I wont be the first or last person to say that.

I’ve never seen this flick that was released in 1967 with Candice Bergen. As far as I’ve read it’s never been released on tape or DVD in North America. Most will recognize the music of composer Francis Lai from the film that preceded this one “A Man And A Woman” which garnered a few Oscars and some international acclaim. He also won the Oscar for best score in 1970 for “Love Story”.  The tracks I chose here are a bit more rockin’ as the rest of the soundtrack is a bit more subdued. The first track has some great fuzz guitar and the second has a woman laughing manically throughout for some reason?  Enjoy.

The song I bring you today is not really indicative of Colosseum general recorded output. They’re considered more of a jazz-rock band with some progressive and blues rock overtones. So the first time I heard “The Kettle” was on The Devil’s Music blog.  I knew from the first few bars that this was the sample used by Fatboy Slim aka Norman Cook in his track Push The Tempo. Watch the vid below it’s one of the best rock videos OF ALL TIME!

Back to “The Kettle” off Colosseum’s second LP Valentyne Suite released in 1969 on the Vertigo in the UK. (The first LP released on that label) My copy which arrived last week is a German pressing on the Bronze label and comes in a gatefold sleeve. This song has some heavy-ass, Hendrix style guitar freak-out, insane drumming and acid-tinged lyrics. Pretty much everything I desire in a late 60′s rock opus.
